LSG Penalized for Slow Over-Rate
Under the leadership of Rishabh Pant, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) faced penalties for a slow over-rate during their IPL 2025 match against the Mumbai Indians (MI) on April 27 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where MI emerged victorious.
As per Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, Pant has incurred a fine of INR 24 lakh due to LSG's second violation this season. The remaining players in the squad, including the Impact Player, will be fined either INR 6 lakh or 25% of their match fees, whichever is lesser. Notably, LSG's first infraction occurred against MI on April 4 in Lucknow, resulting in a fine of INR 12 lakh for Pant.
Historically, captains faced a one-match suspension along with a fine for a third offense. For instance, Hardik Pandya missed MI's opening match of IPL 2025 against Chennai Super Kings due to a third offense in the previous season. However, the IPL governing council has eliminated the one-match ban rule, replacing it with a system of demerit points and fines starting from IPL 2025.
Other captains, including Shubman Gill, Axar Patel, Sanju Samson, Rajat Patidar, Riyan Parag, and Hardik Pandya, have also been fined for similar slow over-rate violations.

Pant's struggles continued throughout the MI match, where MI set a formidable target of 215 runs, with Ryan Rickelton scoring 58 runs. LSG's chase faltered after losing Aiden Markram early for just 9 runs. Although Mitchell Marsh (34) and Nicholas Pooran (27) started well, they were unable to build on their innings.
Currently, LSG sits sixth on the points table with five wins out of ten matches, while Pant's performance has been disappointing, as he was dismissed for just 4 runs off 2 balls, caught attempting a reverse sweep. Over ten matches, he has accumulated only 110 runs, averaging a mere 12.22, with a top score of 63.
